Best class ever. So far.

First things first, I've been back in Athens for a week. Most of the week has been spent doing FRC stuff. By that I mean running around like crazy trying to plan and pull off events. And unpack. And get ready for school. And sleep (occasionally). Thankfully, school has started, our freshmen seem decent, and I now have time to sleep (and blog). I'm still not completely unpacked, although I am close. I don't know what I'm going to do when I bring the Fish here, though, because I haven't found a decent place to stash Carl (the accordian). He's currently living on the aquarium stand because the fish tank is still at home.

Anyway, back to best classes...the one I've not been to yet (the Fraz wasn't the only one to miss a science class today, but my reason is slightly more valid because I just didn't add it until it had already happened) has best OASIS title ever. Are you ready for this? Fungi, Friend or Foe? I'm so serious. This makes me happy. And it's 3000 level.

The real best class ever, though, and mind you, this is just an approximate because it looks super neat, is my other PBIO class...3020L, Transposable Elements of Style. Our science professor, Dr. Wessler got a Howard Hughes grant for a million dollars to teach it. Then the provost matched the grant to help pay for the lab. We have our own wetlab and our own new and exciting classroom/computer lab, in which the computer monitors come from inside the table. Like, they're kept in the table, and when you need them you just flip up the little door and slide the monitor up. Coolest thing ever. And they gave us textbooks and binders with dividers. For free. Free office supplies are the best.

But the neatest thing is actually the class itself. We're studying transposable elements, which are a part of dna sequencing. As I currently understand it, they're genetic mutations, but the difference between TE's and normal mutations is that TE's can pop right back out and leave the gene the way it was. Like magic, only genetics. Apparently they make up a large percentage of our genome. I'm looking forward to learning more about them, because they sound crazy cool. Apparently we'll be working with corn.

Except that's not all. You'll remember the course is called Transposable Elements of Style. Where's the style, you ask? It's also a writing class. Our lab reports are supposedly more qualitative than quantitative, and our two papers are short stories/writing assignments. Also, all the people in the class seem cool so far. I'm super excited. I love college.

And then in addition to the PBIO load I have my internship, which I'll learn more about on Monday, and in major news I have Film Theory, which is the last film class I have to take. It's kinda depressing, but exciting in the fact that it lets me take other stuff, and that anything else I take is voluntary.

Reading this back, I sound like a huge nerd. But I guess I am a huge nerd. Oh well. Happy August.
